Weekend Box Office: Puss in Boots Claws Its Way to the Top

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/31/11 at 12:22 PM CT

With so many things happening this weekend: baseball, snow storms and early Halloween celebrations, the box office was a bit frightening over the weekend.

None-the-less, there was a winner and it happened to be feline in nature. Puss in Boots, a spin-off from the Shrek series, took in $34 million to lead the pack. It was helped by 3D, which accounted for 51% of the take. Despite the #1 finish,...

New Movies to Crave: Can Puss in Boots Bring Down Johnny Depp, Justin Timberlake and The Bard?

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/28/11 at 10:31 AM CT

Survey says: Most likely. For one thing, there hasn't been a lot for families to sit down to lately, so an animated film, especially one featuring a hugely popular character from an already-popular franchise is sure to draw in that crowd.

1) So Puss in Boots, with Antonio Banderas taking on the slick feline, is joined by Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris and ta...

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: Attack the Block with Captain America and Winnie The Pooh

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/25/11 at 11:54 AM CT

It's a battle between British sci-fi and an all-American hero with mediation done by a stuffed bear. Oh, bother!

1) Out of all the super hero films that came out this year, I give my highest recommendation to Captain America: The Firs...

Weekend Box Office: Audiences Possessed By Paranormal Activity 3

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/23/11 at 11:48 PM CT

You know it's getting close to Halloween because audiences are hungry for horror. And it just so happens there was a new horror movie released this weekend! Isn't that a lovey coincidence?

It appears the Paranormal Activity franchise doesn't have to worry about a thing - operating on a $5 million budget, the third movie (a prequel to the first two films) took in $54 million over the weekend, e...

When Oscar Bait is Just Chum

patjohnson76 - wrote on 10/22/11 at 10:09 AM CT

I've been behind in getting to movies lately, but yesterday I took a step in the right direction by seeing a matinee of The Ides of March, the latest political drama with an Oscar cast directed by George Clooney. It's had great reviews with an okay box office, but since politics interest me I was pretty excited to see this movie. So were the other three people in the theater.

I try not to go i...

New Movies to Crave: A Paranormal Prequel, Some Musketeers and Johnny English

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/21/11 at 10:56 AM CT

Do you think what's old is new again? Hopefully so, because the top draws this weekend all have one thing in common - they've all been here before.

1) Hoping that the third time is just as charming, Paranormal Activity 3 goes back in time to show us how the heroines/victims in the first two films first came in contact with the demon who would go on to ruin their adult lives. I hope this series...

What Has Happened to My Horror?

Matthew Sanchelli - wrote on 10/20/11 at 04:53 PM CT

Since it is October, with Halloween only a matter of days away, it only seems appropriate to talk about flicks that keep us up at night.

If you know me, which most of you do not, you know I grew up watching horror movies.

It has been so long I, sadly, do not remember which one was my first horror screening. I do remember watching lovelies like Child's Play, The Gate, Poltergeist, The Child...

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: Visit Stranger Tides & Monte Carlo with a Bad Teacher

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/18/11 at 08:40 PM CT

If you subscribe to the belief it's all about the journey, not the destination, this week's releases should help raise your spirits.

1) For Captain Jack Sparrow and crew, the journey often proves as just, if not more exciting, then the final destination.

Footloose (2011) Ruined my Childhood!

patjohnson76 - wrote on 10/17/11 at 08:19 PM CT

Actually it didn't, I haven't seen it.

And even if I did see it, I'd never say a movie ruined my childhood.

Last weekend saw the release of Footloose, which, from what I understand, stays pretty faithful to the 1984 Kevin Bacon movie about the town where dancing is banned (but everyone is still a really, really, really good dancer).

As with most remakes that have come out, a collective ...

Weekend Box Office: Real Steel Deals Another Knock Out, Footloose Dances Just Behind

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/17/11 at 12:07 AM CT

Once again it was a good weekend for boxing robots, only a so-so weekend for remakes and an awful weekend for bird-watching comedies.

The Hugh Jackman Rocky-meets-robots Real Steel was down about 40% from its debut last weekend, but still took the top spot with $16.3 million and bringing its total over the $50 million mark with a $51.7 million total. While it fell a little steeper than last Oc...

New Movies to Crave: Watching Birds, Dancing and One Cold Alien

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/14/11 at 02:01 PM CT

Two remakes (well, one remake and one "prequel"), some bird-watching comedy and Pedro Almodóvar's latest, twisted film all fight for the top spot this week - but will anyone be interested?

1) While no films truly stand out for me this week, I'll go with the one I would most likely watch at some point in time: The Thing. Now, remakes or reinterpretations or prequels - whenever you're dealing wi...

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: Green Lantern Saves the World from Horrible Bosses, Zookeeper

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/11/11 at 11:48 AM CT

Weekend Box Office: Real Steel Clobbers Competition

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/10/11 at 01:10 AM CT

The robots of Real Steel rocked and socked their way to the top of the box office this weekend.

With an estimated $27.3 million, the robot boxing film took top place. If you're comparing it to other boxing or sports movies, it did spectacular business besting Rocky IV's $20 million and coming in just behind Blind Side's $34.1 million. However, if you're comparing it to science fiction films, ...

New Movies to Crave: Can Real Steel Deliver a Knockout to The Ides of March?

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/07/11 at 06:47 PM CT

Did you miss me? If I have any steady readers, I was in DC on vacation last week and didn't get my usual blogs in. Fret not, I'm back in the saddle again. If you're looking for the popular movies this week, you can choose between a taut political drama or a rock-'em sock-'em robot Rocky.

1) For my money, I have to give the edge to The Ides of March. Ryan Gosling may not have made as big of im...

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: Pull a Fast Five on Scream 4 While The Lion King Roars

Chris Kavan - wrote on 10/03/11 at 11:16 PM CT

Enjoy a mix of something old and something new this week as you have a few sequels and the return of some favorites in high definition to dedicate a few hours of you life to.

1) Who says you can't reinvent the wheel? Or in this case the whole car-related movie. With four films of varying quality, one could argue that
