New in Theaters October 26: Hunter Killer, Indivisible

While October has rolled to some record territory, it is going to be the hold-overs that drag this Halloween box office. The two newcomers, submarine drama Hunter Killer and inspirational film Indivisible, aren't likely to stir up audiences. Rather, it looks like Halloween, Venom, A Star is Born and even Goosebumps 2 will likely once again rule the roost. It should still be a rather profitable weekend with people getting into that Halloween spirit. Maybe not as big as last weekend, but big enough to keep October going strong.

HUNTER KILLER Gerard Butler is kind of your go-to guy when you need a somewhat tough action type. That is good, because Hunter Killer is a somewhat generic action film. The film follows an untested submarine captain and a group of Navy SEALS who find themselves on a mission to rescue the Russian president after he is taken by a rogue general. I mean, that premise is flawed already because who in there right mind would want to actually SAVE the Russian president? (I kid - please don't send assassins after me). Story aside, this looks exactly like the kind of forgettable action movie that is usually dumped in late fall to make room for something better. Butler is joined by Common, Gary Oldman, Linda Cardellini, Michael Nyqvist (in one of his final roles) and Michael Gor. I mean, it looks like a serviceable action film, just not one that I think huge audiences are going to rush out to see. A solid streaming title for a boring afternoon, but nothing I'm overly excited about, nor do I see it making that big of impact over the weekend.

INDIVISIBLE If Hunter Killer is likely to have a minimal impact at the box office, Indivisible will be lucky to make a peep. Indivisible takes the horrors of war, or at least the aftermath, and shows how it affects relationships and faith. The fact is being distributed by Pure Flix is all I need to know - and the fact the top-billed actors are best known for Grey's Anatomy. I'm not sure how faith-based this one is going to be, but I can already tell you it will be too much for my tastes. I also have a feeling it's just not going to attract a big enough audience to be much of a factor over the weekend - and could very well fall outside the top 10. Faith-based films tend to attract a core audience, but often fail to drive in big general audiences. Yes, there have been exceptions (both good and bad in my book) but I don't think Indivisible will join that club.

I think the box office is going to look very familiar this weekend, as I expect most of the top five to remain the same. I'll be back on Sunday with a full breakdown of the weekend.
