This is more "classic" Bond than the first film in the series. This is really the start of the inventive gadgets, the catchy one-liners, and the memorable villains. The political intrigue and villainy is handled well here. One of the best Bond films.

An improvement over the already solid first film. It's one of the best of the series still to this day.

"From Russia With Love" by Yojimbo

Shadowy criminal organisation SPECTRE plan to play the Russians and British secret service off against each other to obtain a strategically important decoding machine. The recent "reinvention" of Bond was really more of a process of going back to the roots of the franchise. The gritty, no-nonsense almost amoral tone of Bond was already in place at a very early stage and this is one of the best examples. Connery had eased nicely into the part and here shows the easy charm and tough guy charisma that enabled him to make the part his own and he shares a charming relationship with the lovely Daniela Bianchi rather than the cynical misogyny of the later films. There are also great turns from Pedro Armendariz as his Turkish sidekick and especially Robert Shaw as a sociopathic hired killer; he o...

From Russia with love

The second in the James Bond spy film series, and the second to star Sean Connery as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. Released in 1963, the film was produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, and directed by Terence Young. It is based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Ian Fleming. In the film, James Bond is sent to assist in the defection of Soviet consulate clerk Tatiana Romanova in Turkey, where SPECTRE plans to avenge Bond's killing of Dr. No.
Following the success of Dr. No, United Artists approved a sequel, doubling the budget available for the producers. In addition to filming on location in Turkey, the action scenes were shot both in Scotland and Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire. Production ran over budget and schedule, and had to rush to finish by its scheduled Oc...

From Russia With Love review

M sends 007 to Istanbul to meet station head Ali Kerim Bey to spy on the Soviets while Q introduces Bond's nifty paraphernalia. The belly dancing seemed to run too long. Vavra thanks Bond for saving his life. Tania informs Bond about the Lektor cryptographic device. Grant divulges to Bond that SPECTRE was behind in letting the Soviets and the British go against each other. Rosa Klebb tries to steal the Lektor. Had gorgeous cinematography, story fast paced, witty lines, wonderful locations, numerous gadgets and believable action. Unfortunately its effects seem dated and the score a bit sleepy, but overall From Russia with Love is definitely one of the best Bond films created. The reviewer sights this as one of its personal favorites.
