Monsieur Verdoux

3/4 stars

This isn't as whimsical or slapstick-driven as Chaplin's previous films. Here, he creates a heartfelt drama that injects elements of black comedy into a macabre story. The film shies away from its darker moments, but that doesn't change the fact that Chaplin plays a uniquely conflicted anti-hero who, at first, kills without remorse. The film is an odd, but worthwhile journey and Chaplin's nuanced portrayal of Verdoux is what anchors the film. (My only complaint really is why the film is set in France, though using completely English actors and settings. It seems like an unnecessary setting choice, if the filmmakers weren't going to attempt to recreate the environment.
