The Matrix
The Matrix review
4/4 stars

A hacker has been summoned to make something happen for the better. There are sentinels, computer programs, a sophisticated ship, traitors, martial arts and lots of weapons involved in this unique groundbreaking film. The plot is intriguing and inimitable at the same time. The fight scenes have been replicated by several films and shows. Its idea and concept could have birthed the film Inception. Morpheus (played by Laurence Fishburne) teaches Neo (Keanu Reeves) how to manipulate the program to his advantage. Trinity aids Neo in certain missions. One of the best lines from the film: Neo – “You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone, and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world … without you. A world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries; a world where anything is possible.” Morpheus – “Born into a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch. A prison for your mind.” “You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system that they will fight to protect it.”

The film was shot stylishly; the wardrobe looked eloquent and futuristic. When I was watching this film, I’ve always wanted to get one of those shades worn by Morpheus. The training of Neo reminded me of Luke and Yoda in Empire Strikes Back. The wise Morpheus imparting knowledge on how Neo can become “the One.” His words – “there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.” The thought of learning Kung-Fu or the ability to make a row of arsenal in seconds was awesome. This flick was enjoyable from beginning to end. There was no wasted frame and soundtrack, the story was compelling since it had small twists within. Imagine if were all in the Matrix, the real world is deteriorating since machines have taken over. This is a daunting realization if we continue coming up with methods of being lazy or creating too much that can be uncontrollable. Much like A Space Odyssey, Surrogates or I-Robot, this film sends a message that technology can be bad in the wrong hands or once it becomes too evolved. Love, loyalty, hope, possibilities and friendship are displayed with the main protagonists dialogues and actions. I felt the original was the best compared to the other 2 installments. The others were too complicated, tried too hard to impress and overly dramatic at fault. The first kept it simple, yet gratifying and thought-provoking. In one of many astute messages from Morpheus – “How would you know the difference between the dream world, and the real world?” The Matrix is totally a different world that truly helps us realize that sometimes what we do or are being, can sometimes be unrealistic, but the movie itself very much real in entertaining us.
